WENNER, WENNER.
After several unsuccessful attempts to reposition Rolling Stone around music, Jann Wenner threatened to hand the high-profile assignment to a New York agency.
Then Wenner saw this idea.
I didn’t pitch this because anyone asked me to. I did it as a lifelong lover of music and a twenty-year subscriber at the time. I did it because I love music.
Wenner asked that I be made creative director of the Rolling Stone account.
And that’s how I ended up running Land Rover and Rolling Stone at the same time.
I wasn’t trying to be universally despised by my colleagues.
In retrospect, I would have hated me, too.
